According to Fischer, Muslims deserve no First Amendment rights: “Islam has no fundamental First Amendment claims, for the simple reason that it was not written to protect the religion of Islam. Islam is entitled only to the religious liberty we extend to it out of courtesy.” Since the religious rights of Muslims are only temporary and can be rescinded, he contends, “Muslims have no First Amendment right to build mosques in America. They have that privilege at the moment, but it is a privilege that can be revoked.” He instead believes that the Founding Fathers only wanted to extend rights to different Protestant denominations, and bizarrely justifies his argument by citing proposed amendments that were rejected by the drafters of the Constitution.

Here’s the full radio interview that Alan Colmes of Fox News Radio did with Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association…the interview that Fischer referenced in the clip that claimed that Colmes and the “mainstream media” was playing “gotcha” journalism.

The questions that Colmes were asking were completely and unequivocally valid and deserved to be answered.

Bryan Fischer of American Family Association claims that Muslims in Texas are celebrating the 10th anniversary of 9/11 by going to an amusement park and having Muslim Family Day.

I am sick of these ignorant conservative blowhards who drum up non-controversies and take advantage of Americans’ fears about Muslims.

Oh, and by the way, Fischer got the day wrong also:

People in America who are Islamophobic drummed up this controversy and the fake Ground Zero mosque controversy last year, and suckered several of my friends into the fold.

Sounds like Republicans needed to rally up support, because their candidates are struggling to grab a foothold against Obama.

They don’t have any new ideas, and sure aren’t going to be helping the country.

God Hates F*** Is The Heart of the Religious Right in America

Say what you will about the Westboro Baptist Church, at least they are straight forward about their argument. Fred Phelps doesn’t go around hiding his hateful message in code phrases such as “protecting marriage” or waste time talking about how his organization is only trying to defend “family values.” They cut straight to the point. God hates fags. Simple. Concise. It takes people like Tony Perkins the entirety of his Hardball segment to put a well honed shine on precisely the same message.

This nuance is the mark of a quality hate group. While it is impossible to take the Westboro Baptist Church seriously, organizations like Focus on the Family maintain their popular legitimacy by being sneakier about their hate. They operate through slander, and construct elaborate narratives designed to paint the LGBT community as sinister and depraved. It is important they not be seen as the mean spirited thugs they truly are, but as heroes, fighting on behalf of the Lord in the war on moral decay. Only then can their own motivations escape scrutiny.

But the work of fantasy creation is hard and perpetual. In order to create the monsters their campaign requires, they must always be super imposing their version of reality on the world. This effort is much like trying to blow up an inner-tube with a hole in it; it will only stay inflated for as long as someone is breathing hot air into it. Every mild-mannered same-sex couple who wishes only to adopt must be somehow transformed into dire threats to society. Every gender non-conforming teenager must be marginalized and painted as maladjusted threats to community tranquillity. Every moment must be tinted and reprogrammed to reflect their basic assertions. This is the job of people like Tony Perkins. He constructs the argument.

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

Gays shouldn’t be allowed to do [whatever the topic of discussion happens to be] because they have never been allowed to historically. It will lead to acceptance of the “homosexual lifestyle.” This acceptance will cause the destruction of society.

Why will not being awful to gay people destroy society?

Because homosexual behavior is immoral, and doing anything other than throwing rocks these degenerates amounts to willing support of immorality.

And why is this behavior immoral, and not just, you know, none of anyone’s business?

Because God says so, and don’t argue, because if you do, it means that you are discriminating against Christians, and our right to deprive people of their civil rights in accordance with Jewish laws written thousands of years ago. We believe it, so you have to too.

In summary, God hates fags.

Shockingly, some people require more proof than the biblical interpretations of Fred Phelps and Rick Santorum. After all, there is a vast portfolio of things that piss off God. The Bible takes a decidedly hard line on adultery for example, yet somehow Newt Gingrich’s propensity for double-booking his penis isn’t so much of a problem.

“Bearing False Witness” is also kind of a no-no, yet that doesn’t stop Rick Santorum from lying his ass off whenever the moment suits him.  How are those on the fence supposed to understand how dangerous homosexuality really is? Can someone produce a little evidence of this homosexuality provoked global carnage?

Friends, this is where things get ugly.

Meet Bryan Fischer. Mr Fischer hosts a radio show, and has long worked with the American Family Association (SPLC-certified hate group) as Director of Issue Analysis for Government and Public Policy. Mr. Fischer was a massive Rick Perry supporter, and as part of the AFA helped sponsor Rick Perry’s prayer rally held back in August. He is also an AIDS denialist.

That’s right. AIDS Denialism is a thing. In America, AIDS denialism is the notion that rather than AIDS being caused by HIV, AIDS is instead brought on either by the “unhealthy nature” of homosexuality, or as punishment from God, or most probably, both. I’ll let Mr. Fischer explain. From The Huffington Post:

“The reason HIV was invented as the cause of AIDS is it was a way to get research money,” [Bryan] Fischer, who serves as Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association (AFA), said on his “Focal Point” radio show. “If AIDS is caused by behavior…there’s no money in that because you just tell people, ‘Hey, stop doing the behavior.’ So that’s why they have to find some bug that they can blame it on.”

I know. Shocking, right? What the hell is he talking about? HIV dosen’t cause AIDS? Since when? How on earth would this horrifying person justify such absurd nonsense? Further explanation can be found in this post from the AFA blog, in a post authored by Mr. Fischer.

Gays around the world have been all atwitter over my reporting on Peter Duesberg’s theory that HIV does not cause AIDS. Duesberg, who is a molecular biologist at UC Berkeley and one of the leading virologists in the world, argues, persuasively in my view, that HIV is a harmless passenger virus. (His credentials are impeccable: he isolated the first cancer gene in 1970, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1986.)

The breakdown in the immune system, which gives AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) its name, is caused, in Duesberg’s scientific opinion, by the cumulative damage done to the human body primarily through the use of alkyl nitrites, or “poppers,” in the homosexual subculture. Inhaling nitrites heightens the sexual experience and makes it possible to engage in multiple sexual episodes in a matter of hours.

See how that works? Conservatives require “proof” that being gay is immoral and will lead to the destruction of society. AIDS has served as that proof. It is used as the great gay boogyman by those unscrupulous and shameless enough to resort to using it. People like Tennessee State Senator Stacey Campfield, who last week said:

It is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex.

In other words, only filthy gay people get AIDS. Read David Badash’s superb take down of Stacey Campfield right here.

So who is this Peter Duesberg, scholar of the AIDS Denialism movement, the man who represents the cornerstone upon which the premise of AIDS denialism is based? Bryan Fischer is right. He does have outstanding credentials. He was in fact elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1986, and was really was the first person to isolate a Cancer Gene. All true.

Keep in mind though, it wasn’t until 1987 that he started talking about this nutty AIDS denialsm stuff, and it wasn’t exactly well received in the scientific community. Steven Epstein goes into this in some detail his his excellent book Impure Science: AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge.

I’m going to edit this down, as the section is quite long, but I encourage any of you interested to read the entire thing. It really is worth it.

…PNAS [Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences] was unlikely to be receptive to Duesberg’s views. Yet by virtue of having been inducted into the academy a few years earlier, Duesberg enjoyed a privilege unique in the world of scientific research: NAS members generally could publish in the Proceedings without submitting themselves to the rigors of formal, anonymous peer review.

[Chairman of the editorial board Igor Dawid] eventually surrendered to the inevitable. “At this state of protracted discussion I shall not insist here—if you wish to make these unsupported, vague, and prejudicial statements in print, so be it. But I cannot see how this could be convincing to any scientifically trained reader.” In truth, what Dawid may have failed to see was that Duesberg could later use the very fact of having been published in the Proceedings as capital to advance his position.

Which is exactly what he did. But perhaps this is just an example of the scientific community expressing resistance to an unpopular or controversial idea. I turn to this investigation by Science Magzine to do the heavy lifting here:

This investigation reveals that although the Berkeley virologist raises provocative questions, few researchers find his basic contention that HIV is not the cause of AIDS persuasive. Mainstream AIDS researchers argue that Duesberg’s arguments are constructed by selective reading of the scientific literature, dismissing evidence that contradicts his theses, requiring impossibly definitive proof, and dismissing outright studies marked by inconsequential weaknesses.

The main conclusions of Science’s investigation are that:

  • In hemophiliacs (the group Duesberg acknowledges provides the best test case for the HIV hypothesis) there is abundant evidence that HIV causes disease and death.
  • According to some AIDS researchers, HIV now fulfills the classic postulates of disease causation established by Robert Koch.
  • The AIDS epidemic in Thailand, which Duesberg has cited as confirmation of his theories, seems instead to confirm the role of HIV.
  • AZT and illicit drugs, which Duesberg argues can cause AIDS, don’t cause the immune deficiency characteristic of that disease.

In short, Peter Deusberg is completely full of shit. Not that it matters. Bryan Fischer has no interest in what is or isn’t true. He is interested only in advancing his view that homosexuals have brought AIDS on themselves. Only in this way can institutional mistreatment of the LGBT community be justified to the American people, religious or otherwise.

AIDS Denialism is monstrously dangerous, and displays a pathological lack of humanity. President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa used the work of Peter Duesberg to justify his policy banning access to critical antiretroviral drugs, leading to around 343,000 preventable deaths and contributing the the unrestrained spread of the disease throughout the world. Countless millions of lives will in the end be impacted by these choices, justified by Peter Deusberg’s “unsupported, vague, and prejudicial statements.”

The view that AIDS results in the righteous deaths of immoral heathens can be traced all the way back to the source from which all the most lasting conservatives values stem: Ronald Reagan. In 1987 when after years of pretending that AIDS didn’t exist, and siting idly by while thousands of Americans died simply because he didn’t like homosexuals that much, Reagan finally managed to cough up this little nugget, at the announcement of his way-too-late initiative to fight the spreading epidemic.

Let’s be honest with ourselves, AIDS information can not be what some call ‘value neutral.’ After all, when it comes to preventing AIDS, don’t medicine and morality teach the same lessons.

What lessons would those be exactly? That homosexuals get what’s coming to them? The religious right has always seen AIDS as fitting punishment for the “sin” of homosexuality, and they will always resist giving up that notion, even if they have to distort scientific fact to do it, because for them, at the heart of it, God hates fags.

Anti-Gay Brian Fischer of the AFA Praises Fox News For Running A News Network "Exactly The Style That Jesus Taught?!" Is He Insane?!!

NOTE: I do not agree with Fischer’s demented comments about Christianity. Fox News is the most anti-Christian network in not only the country, but the entire world. Fischer is practicing exactly what Jesus taught AGAINST: which is making a vain show of Christian faith and praying vain prayers in public. Jesus didn’t like that the Pharisees made spectacles of themselves by praying extravagant prayers that God would pretty much laugh at.

Rick Perry and others in the GOP are guilty of this! Last time I checked, Jesus never lied. Fox News lies on a daily basis, as often as every second. Jesus cared for the poor, which Fox News and the GOP do not! Jesus wanted to communicate and live with the outcasts of society, the GOP and Fox News never fail to criticize everyone else who doesn’t fit into their warped and narrow stereotype of what a “right” person should be.

This article was begging for me to criticize it. When my faith and my beliefs are being warped by people who claim to be the believers in Jesus Christ that they think they are, I will refuse to stay silent. My religion has been hijacked by nutcases, nutcases that think that the rich (or in the case of the Bible, the Pharisees and the royalty) deserve to live life in luxury, while the poor are treated like underling slaves. Nutcases that think that having Christianity as the dominant religion in the United States is a good thing, when the Founders of our country were Deists who didn’t even believe in the Holy Trinity or in Jesus being the savior of mankind. Nutcases that think that vain shows of prayer, about things such as ending abortion, stopping the legalization of same-sex marriage, or even getting liberals out of the United States, actually make God love them more (when Jesus himself in the Bible condemned the Pharisees for doing the exact same thing).

In a column, “Jesus explains the success of Fox News,” American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer claims that Fox News president Roger Ailes’s “leadership style is exactly the style that Jesus taught.” Fischer credits Ailes’s Jesus-like behavior for Fox’s success and says “the key to success in a capitalistic system is to do things Jesus’ way.”

For Fischer, it is “Jesus’ way” to encourage someone to lie under oath, threaten the elderly publisher of a small newspaper, introduce a series of political dirty tricks, including racially charged campaign strategies and television ads, and manage a media outlet which lies and foments extremism on a routine basis.

An interesting story on Politico this morning, explaining the success of Fox News, which has double the audience of CNN and MSNBC. The brainchild of Fox is Roger Ailes, and the Politico piece quotes Shepard Smith about his leadership style:

“We have one dad in this family,” said Shepard Smith, a star anchor who was a correspondent in the Los Angeles bureau at launch. “He makes all the decisions, and you know exactly who you have to go to, and you know when to stop asking. If you get an answer from Mr. Ailes’s office, that’s the answer; it’s time to move on.”

Smith said that when he leaves Ailes’s office, “the last thing he asks me is, ‘What can I do for you?’ And the last thing he tells me is he loves me. That’s not going to work everywhere, and most people will hear that and go, ‘You are full of crap.’ That’s exactly how it is here, and I love it.”

In other words, whether Ailes realizes it or not, his leadership style is exactly the style that Jesus taught.

Remember that Jesus said, in Mark 10:45, “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve.” Ailes is successful not because he can throw his weight around, but because he uses his weight to serve the people who work for him. By serving them rather than spending all day ordering them around, he gives them the opportunity to succeed and in turn he receives the considerable reward of their talent and effort.

Bottom line: the key to success in a capitalistic system is to do things Jesus’ way. Who knew?

Filling in as host for the “AFR Mornings” program today, Bryan Fischer brought on anti-gay activist Michael Brown to discuss his recent column defending Kirk Cameron from a tweet by Roseanne Barr in which she said Cameron was “an accomplice to murder with his hate speech” by claiming that Michelle Obama must then also be “complicit in the suicides of kids who were bullied because of their obesity.”

Fischer loved that line of reasoning, adding that it was “just ridiculous on its face” to think that being mocked, ridiculed, and condemned would lead gay kids to commit suicide. After all, Fischer said, the AFA is “relentlessly hammered, condemned, criticized, [and] judged” every single day and nobody there is tempted to end their life just because they are being ridiculed.

What an ignorant prick! Mocking, ridicule, and criticism does lead to suicide. Bryan Fischer is completely inconsiderate to the teenagers and young adults that have killed themselves due to bullying (which includes ridicule, mocking, and criticism, usually due to actual or perceived sexual orienation.

Bryan Fischer, do us a favor and shut the hell up!!

The American Family Association’s village idiot and hypocrite Bryan Fischer is clueless about his own defenses of downright lies and half-truths.

He claims that liberals “never check their facts and simply repeat false information,” something he claims he would “never do.”

You’ve forgotten your own instances of simply “repeat[ing] false information:”

This is the same Bryan Fischer who, in recent months, has declared that Hitler was gay, the Tea Party ended slavery in America, HIV does not cause AIDS, JC Penney was causing for breast cancer and suicide, and Bill Clinton was responsible for the rise in oral cancer.

Rather than make an indictment against Democrats and the Left, Fischer indicted his own political party.

The GOP is infamous for not “checking their facts” and “simply repeating false information.”

They’re also infamous for double-talking, flip-flopping, smearing, slut-shaming, victim-shaming, and twisting the facts around to suit their alternate reality.

Romney Hires Openly Gay Spokesman...Bryan Fischer Pitches a Hissy...Gay Republicans Fight Back!!!

A leading anti-gay figure in the Republican Party attacked Governor Mitt Romney for hiring an openly gay spokesman, sending a shot from the GOP’s socially-conservative base across the nominee’s bow.

Bryan Fischer, the director of issue analysis for the Tupelo, Miss.-based American Family Association, is probably the most straightforwardly anti-gay Republican to appear regularly in the party’s mainstream. Presidential candidates including Rick Santorum have appeared on his radio show, and he spoke at the Values Voter Summit in Washington in October.

He responded yesterday to Romney’s decision to hire an openly-gay — “out & loud gay,” in Fischer’s terms — foreign policy spokesman, Richard Grenell by calling it a “message to the pro-family community” of “drop dead.”

Grenell was a longtime spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. He was known by the press as a loyal, and combative, appointee to a series of ambassadors including John Bolton, to whom he remains close. He also fought a long, and unsuccessful battle for formal recognition of his partner in diplomatic documents.

The blast from Fischer comes after Romney, in an unusual act that drew less attention than it might have, publicly distanced himself in strong terms from Fischer from the stage of the Values Voter Summit.

““Our values ennoble the citizen and strengthen the nation. We should remember that decency and civility are values too,” Romney said. “One of the speakers who will follow me today, has crossed that line, I think. Poisonous language doesn’t advance our cause. It’s never softened a single heart nor changed a single mind.”

Grenell has also criticized Democrats for settling for Obama’s halfway positions on issues like gay marriage, though Romney is considerably to Obama’s right.

Gay conservatives, meanwhile, defended Grenell and praised Romney for the move.

“Ric Grennell is the best person for the job. That’s why Governor Romney hired him. Throughout his entire career, Mitt Romney has brought together top talent to tackle the tasks at hand. All Americans should want the best people helping to elect him to take on the job of bringing America back,” Jimmy LaSalvia, the executive director of the group GOProud, told BuzzFeed. “It’s too bad that Mr. Fischer doesn’t agree.”

Others sought to use the moment to cast Fischer beyond the pale.

“So to be clear - Fischer believes that gay people shouldn’t be hired by the Romney campaign at all,” said GOProud co-founder Chris Barron. “Shows what am unreconstructed bigot he really is. It’s never been about protecting marriage for bigots like Fischer and he continues to expose what a charade his ‘marriage’ and ‘family’ talk has been all along.”

And Grenell’s appointment appointment was greeted warmly by some gay leaders.

“We applaud the participation of out professionals in government and politics. Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, serving openly is important. It allows you to speak honestly about yourself and the LGBT community to colleagues inside campaigns and government offices,”
Chuck Wolfe, CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, told The Advocate yesterday.

Even the gay group human rights campaign, a frequent Romney critic, sided with the Republican on this one.

“Ric’s been hired because he’s good at what he does and that’s what matters. At the end of the day, that’s what Americans care about,” said HRC’s vice president for communications, Fred Sainz. “While i don’t agree with his politics, there’s absolutely no denying that Ric is incredibly smart and undeniably strategic.”

Some Democratic gay activists, however, saw the flap in less sympathetic terms.

“Let them have at it,” Richard Socarides, a former Clinton aide, told BuzzFeed. “Fun for the whole family.”

Grenell and Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom didn’t respond to inquiries about Fischer’s tweet.

Right-Wing Leaders Slam Obama's "Pro-Homosexual" Agenda...In Other News, Right-Wingers Are More Concerned With Homosexuality Than Homosexuals Are!!!

Two high-profile right-wing pundits are kicking off May with slams to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

As Right Wing Watch is reporting, the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer quoted Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech to argue in favor of discrimination against gays on his “Focal Point” program yesterday.

Noting that King had hope to “live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” Fischer — who has previously endorsed the notion that the HIV virus is not the true cause of AIDS — continued, “You begin to see the implications when it comes to homosexuality, because you’re dealing there with issues of content of character. You are dealing with issues of behavior and conduct, and it’s perfectly appropriate to discriminate against immoral conduct.”

Right Wing Watch also reports that similarly, Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) President Peter LaBarbera took to the airwaves to decry not only members of the LGBT community, but the Obama administration as well.

“The Obama administration has turned the United States into a huge gay-rights government,” LaBarbera, who appeared on Michael Brown’s “Line of Fire” radio program, said. “There’s lots of government and states, whether they’re Muslim or like ardently Christian nations like Uganda that don’t want, they don’t share the caviler attitude of the West toward homosexuality, they certainly don’t want to promote it. And all of a sudden Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have turned the United States into a pro-homosexual regime and it’s just despicable.”

Dan Savage appears to be a constant source of controversy in the LGBT community, and some recent comments he made may have been the last straw.

At a high school journalism convention recently, Savage told the audience there was “bullshit in the Bible” that needed to be ignored. Some people walked out, and Savage called them “pansy-assed,” for which he later apologized. 

In this article, columnist Jay Michaelson argues that Savage’s comments were just as harmful to the LGBT community as they would have been if they were made by a super conservative a la Rick Santorum. It’s an unfortunately common misconception that people have to choose between religion and an LGBT identity, and Savage’s comments could certainly be taken as alienating to queer people of faith.

It’s all well and good for a religious progressive to insist that the Bible be interpreted selectively. But where does that leave kids growing up in religious communities committed to a more conservative view?  Must such communities abandon their faith and adopt Dan Savage’s theology in order to affirm and include their LGBT members? If that were the price of inclusion, I know many communities would refuse to pay it. But fortunately, it is not. Very traditional religious values, no theological salad bar required, support inclusion and affirmation of LGBT lives.  No matter what Rick Santorum, and now Dan Savage, says.

If nothing else, a very provocative headline.

Dan Savage is not “insisting that the Bible be interpreted selectively,” he is pointing out that it already is, in literally every single case, interpreted selectively. Unless you are stoning adulterers, you are interpreting the Bible selectively. By this definition, all such communities have “abandoned their faith.” His question was: why must the verse condemning gay people in Leviticus be followed to the letter, while almost none of the other ones are? [bold emphasis here is mine. — TK-S]

Savage has a brain. So No. no he’s not.

Dan Savage is EXTREMELY problematic. I admire his “It Gets Better” project, but I loathe and hate and despise his trans* phobia. That said, I think he was attempting to point out the hypocrisy of the Christian Right (which is neither Christian nor right), and badly executed his remarks.

I don’t really think its fair to compare Savage to Rick Santorum anymore — that’s been done, Santorum has his eternal Internet revenge.

But it is TOTALLY FAIR to compare him to a hatemonger that’s become more insidious than Santorum, and that would be the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer. Fischer’s resume of hateful, outrageous, and ignorant bleatings are so numerous I just linked Right Wing Watch’s search page about him instead of trying to point out specific things he has said, there are so many (most recently, that it’s perfectly acceptable to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans.)

I might point this out also: Except for winning a few primaries in Red states (some with insignificant numbers of electoral votes) where cultural wedge issues seem to be more important than real-life issues, at the end of the day Santorum is ineffectual as long as he’s no longer holding public office. The people of his own state booted him out of the Senate in 2006, you might remember.

OTOH, people who listen to Fischer on his broadcasting platform (heard largely on Christian radio stations and on the Internet) are people that think its their sacred duty to get out the vote because its the way they can participate in this sort of Christian Holy War they are trying to wage. THAT should be more frightening to people (also the reason that liberals need to get out the vote in every municipality, every county, every state this November).

But seriously, y’all, Santorum has NOTHING on Bryan Fischer for promoting ignorance. That doesn’t mean Santorum is forgiven or absolved from being a shitebag, because he still is one, but in terms of hyperbolic toxic spew, Fischer’s the champ, and it sometimes seems like Savage is trying to rhetorically “match up” with Fischer more in recent times, thus the uptick in outrageousness exhibited by Savage (as if he wasn’t outrageous before). After Successfully Getting Mitt Romney To Fire Openly Gay Spokesman, Bryan Fischer Now Says Mitt Romney Isn't A Leader!!!

American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer led the right-wing charge against Mitt Romney’s ousted foreign policy spokesman Ric Grennell, lambasting the presumed GOP nominee for hiring the openly-gay aide. When Grennell resigned under pressure from social conservatives this week, Fischer declared it a “huge win.”

But today, Fischer himself backtracked a bit. On his radio, the far-right activist noted what many liberals have, asking, why should voters trust Romney to confront Russia or North Korea if he can’t even stand up to a “yokel” talk show host? Right Wing Watch flagged the clip:

FISCHER: If Mitt Romney can be pushed around, intimidated, coerced, co-opted by a conservative radio talk show host in Middle America, then how is he going to stand up to the Chinese? How is he going to stand up to Putin? How is he going to stand up to North Korea if he can be pushed around by a yokel like me? I don’t think Romney is realizing the doubts that this begins to raise about his leadership.

Anti-Gay Bigot Bryan Fischer's Last Stand Against the Gays!!!

From Idaho to Tupelo, how the last, loudest, proudest scourge of homosexuality made it to the center of the presidential campaign. He thinks Obama is punishing us for our racism, and says he’s Romney’s “best friend,” whether the candidate knows it or not.

The most famous man in Tupelo spends hours each day scrolling through his Google Reader, printing out articles, and stacking them by topic on his dark wooden desk in preparation for his afternoon radio show.

And that’s how the stunning news reached Bryan Fischer one recent Friday morning: Mitt Romney had hired an openly, proudly gay man, Richard Grenell, as his foreign policy spokesman.

“I felt it was a signal from Romney to the homosexual lobby, that you’ve got a friend,” recalled Fischer, the whose formal title is Director of Issue Analysis for the American Family Association.

Fischer sounded the alarm on Twitter: “Romney picks out & loud gay as a spokesman. If personnel is policy, his message to the pro-family community: drop dead.”

Fischer isn’t a Twitter native — he uses it as a broadcast medium, and follows only 26 people — but the clarity and confidence of his views is made for the medium. And that tweet was the spark that set elements of the religious attack into an attack on Grenell, one that — in Grenell’s reported view, if not the Romney campaign’s — ultimately led to the staffer’s high-profile resignation and Romney’s first high-profile general election stumble. The story “just snowballed from there.”

“We got Romney’s attention with Richard Grenell,” Fischer said in an interview in his Tupelo, Mississippi office. “We spooked him. Scared him straight.” Fischer sat back in his chair, a picture of Elvis Presley gyrating his hips on the wall behind him.

Grenell’s departure, Fischer told the audience of his show on the AFA’s talk radio network, “a huge win” for religious conservatives.

The complex campaign flap and the massive publicity around it was also a huge win for Fischer, who has emerged from more or less nowhere — a 29-year pastoral sojourn in Idaho — to become the most visible and defiant figure on the embattled religious right. The unapologetic culture warriors of the 1980s — Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and American Family Association Founder Don Wildmon, among others — have passed away or faded from the cultural landscape. A new generation of Republican politicians is more sensitive to the party’s libertarian strain, while a new generation of Evangelical leaders, led by the California megachurch pastor Rick Warren, has taken a step back from combative cultural politics.

But as other conservative leaders have sought to move with the times, Fischer has tacked in the opposite direction, toward strident and unapologetic attacks on homosexuality in particular. And as bluntly anti-gay rhetoric becomes associated with the fringe — with, in particular, the Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Churck and its notorious “God Hates Fags” signs — the 61-year old Fischer, may be the last out-and-proud anti-gay conservative still inside the Republican Party tent. Every Republican candidate except Romney visited Fischer’s show this year, and he regularly hosts Republican members of Congress. He has a key speaking slot at the Values Voter Summit every year, and the organization shrugged off Romney’s all-purpose denunciation of Fischer at last year’s summit as a speaker of “poisonous” language.

The Grenell issue was illustrative of Fischer’s new, leading role. Other voices on his side were notably more cautious, including even former presidential candidate Gary Bauer, who pointed out that gays were part of the Reagan and Bush administrations and stressed that “our concern is policy.” Other leaders only echoed what Fischer had started.

And with Grenell’s exit, Fischer scored his first real coup, and seems poised to benefit more from conservatives’ disillusionment with Romney than any of the evangelical leaders who have fallen into line with the Republican nominee.

“He’s fearless. He’s prophetic. He will stand on principle regardless of where the chips may fall,” said his friend and regular Focal Point guest Patrick Mahoney, the director of the Christian Defense Coalition. Mahoney said modern-day evangelical leaders “are much less prophetic and direct than Bryan.” Mahoney compared Fischer to the older generation of big-name Christian right leaders, like Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson, but with an important difference: “Bryan understands getting the message out.”

Getting Fischer’s message out is now a large-scale production at the AFA’s Tupelo headquarters. Fischer hosts a two-hour radio show broadcast to hundreds of stations five days a week on AFR talk, plus a regular column and blog at the American Family Association’s website, a Twitter account, and increasingly regular appearances on CNN. This has also, of course, made him a target, something he doesn’t seem to mind. Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart recently showed a clip of Fischer Skyping in to a CNN interview, quipping “In case you’re wondering why he looks so blurry, it’s because his opinions are being broadcast from 50 years ago.” He’s declined to appear with Stewart more than once, he said, and declined an invitation to “talk about the message of Easter” with Stephen Colbert because he doesn’t think Easter is funny.

The cable exposure stems from Fischer’s eagerness to connect biblical narratives to contemporary politics, and his intense interest in the current presidential campaign. Fischer endorsed Rick Perry and described him as “as close as we were going to get to the whole package,” but switched his endorsement to social conservative darling Rick Santorum after Perry dropped out.

Fischer talks about Barack Obama as a menace to American national security, whose policies Fischer claims to have been baffled by until a video of Obama supporting a left-wing, African American Harvard Law Professor, Derrick Bell, re-emerged this spring.

“Is he just inept? Is he just incompetent? Or is this all purposeful?” Fischer asked. These were rhetorical questions.

“The conclusion I’ve come to is that he’s doing this purposefully because he believes that the U.S. needs to be punished for being a racist nation,” Fischer explained. “He is out to punish the United States for being racist.”

When Fischer is in the process of saying things that are likely to stir outrage, his voice becomes even more measured, more thoughtful, as you’d expect from a man who wanted to become a Bible teacher, and who knows that the truth is on his side.

Of liberals and moderates who accuse him of bigotry, he says: “The truth is not bigoted. The truth is not hate speech. And criticism is not hate, it is not hatred. Because if it is, then the left hates me. They’re bigoted. They’re prejudiced. They’re biased.”

Fischer also stresses that he has nothing but Christian love for gays. He draws the line, for instance, at Westboro Baptist, and denounced the group a decade ago in Idaho.

But Fischer is perhaps the last blunt, outsider voice in the 20th century culture war tradition. And the most direct model for Fischer is Donald Wildmon, the radio host and United Methodist minister set up shop in Tupelo in 1977 under the banner of the National Federation for Decency. That group would become the American Family Association, and Wildmon is now its chairman emeritus; his son, Tim, took the reins in 2010.

Wildmon was, with Falwell and Robertson, a pioneer among the blunt and combative culture warriors. He directed his campaigns at the sexual revolution, forcing Sears, for instance, to withdraw its advertising from “Charlie’s Angels” and “Three’s Company,” and has remained an unapologetic champion of the Christian backlash against the gay right movement. When the Boy Scouts stood buy their ban on gay scoutmasters, he congratulated the group on its refusal “expose its young members to lonely sodomites.”

Fischer describes fondly the elder Wildmon fondly as “the pitbull of the pro-family movement.”

Wildmon built a media empire out of a two low-slung brown buildings in a modest office park in Tupelo, a northeast Mississippi town of 35,000. The American Family Association now employs about 180 people and operates two radio networks: AFR Talk, and the larger music- and Bible-focused Inspiration network (or “inspo,” as the staff calls it), as well as putting out a magazine and other forms of outreach.
The grounds include a large room where engineers handle the machinery for the radio networks on plywood tables, and a chapel where the staff holds a daily morning devotional as well as a yearly phone-a-thon to raise money. A large replica of the Ten Commandments greets visitors before entering the main building.

Fischer, now by far the group’s best-known figure, occupies a small office in what the staff calls “leader’s corner,” near president Tim Wildmon. It’s enough space for a bookshelf, desk, and that photo of Elvis, who was born in Tupelo. Fischer isn’t a southerner, though. He was born in Oklahoma, the son of a minister. The family moved frequently, and Fischer spent his junior high and high school years in Fresno, California.

“My dad was the one who introduced me to a relationship with Christ,” Fischer said. “So I’ve always had a strong Christian faith.”

Fischer is tall, with intense blue eyes framed half the time by rectangular glasses and a shock of white hair. He favors button-downs with a slight sheen and dons a tie for his show, which viewers can watch on the Internet as well as listen to on the radio. On his left hand, he wears an ornate wedding ring, and the other hand bears his Stanford class ring (white gold, he noted). Fischer went to Stanford from 1969 to 1973 and was a in a fraternity; he recalls some frat brothers’ irritation at the popularity of the bible studies he led.

After Fischer finished at the Dallas Theological Seminary, the family moved to Boise, where Fischer led the Community Church of the Valley and ran the Idaho Values Alliance, an affiliate of AFA.

Fischer’s political awakening started in the early 1980s, he said, when he began listening to Don Wildmon and Focus on the Family’s James Dobson (the “lion king” to Wildmon’s “pit bull,” says Fischer) on the radio. Fischer decided “to penetrate the culture” and persuade Americans to return to traditional Biblical values, which he views upon the bedrock upon which our society is based. His target, like Wildmon’s, is the sexual revolution of the 1960s in particular, but Fischer’s particular focus has been the rising gay rights revolution. By the late 1990s, he had become the go-to spokesman for traditional values, objecting at one point to a quotation from lesbian tennis great Billie Jean King in Idaho’s new Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial,” and serving a controversial turn as chaplain of the State Senate.

“I’m absolutely convinced that homosexual behavior should never be normalized by rational thinking members of society,” he told BuzzFeed. “Therefore I will resist efforts to normalize homosexuality until the day I die because I think it’s bad for the country.”

And what of the drumbeat volume of accusations from those to his left — including many Republicans — that he is a bigot and a homophobe?

“It doesn’t bother me because I know I’m right.”

“Eventually everybody in America is going to agree with me,” Fischer said gravely. “Either before it’s too late or after it’s too late. Because what we’re talking about is the truth.”

Fischer’s confidence has made him a compelling messenger. In 2009, Tim Wildmon invited him nearly 2,000 miles southeast to work at AFA headquaters, and he and his wife Debbie moved to Tupelo. The couple attends the Hope Church, a midsize evangelical congregation on a desolate highway on the way out of town, and have two grown children, Jenna and J.D.

When the younger Wildmon took over the AFA from his ailing father in 2010, he immediately set out to boost its already-robust radio network — an effort that involved hiring rising star Fischer. AFA’s programming goes out to 200 stations across the country and pulls in between 800,000 and 1.2 million listeners a week, of whom Fischer’s show takes the majority, the group says. Buster Wilson, who hosts the show after Fischer’s, said he believed Fischer had inherited the elder Wildmon’s high-profile role in the conservative movement.

“Bryan will say things that a lot of people on the conservative side of things think but they won’t say,” Wilson said. “Or believe but they won’t speak of,” Wilson said.

And the younger Wildmon, reserved and laconic by contrast with his exuberant staffer, seems comfortable that Fischer, and not he, now wears the father’s controversialist mantle. Though Fischer’s official title with the organization is “Director of Issues Analysis,” Wildmon said that AFA hired him primarily to helm their primetime radio programming.

And Fischer’s penchant for controversy has been good for business.

“He says things that are understood and misunderstood that generate extraordinary attention from the media,” Wildmon said. “I know he’s the favorite of Right Wing Watch. I think he pays their bills.”

Fischer does, indeed, feature regularly on Right Wing Watch, a project of the venerable liberal group People for the Americay Way. Kyle Mantyla, the senior fellow at PFAW who runs the blog, described Fischer in an interview as the “id of the religious right.”

“He says what he wants and doesn’t care about the consequences,” he said, adding that Right Wing Watch’s bloggers watch Fischer’s show every day and have written “hundreds” of posts about him.

Wildmon was careful to note that Fischer’s views, on his blog and on his radio show, do not always reflect those of AFA. He said there have been two instances in the past two years when he’s asked Fischer to take something off the site. One was a post asserting that Native Americans were “morally disqualified” from controlling territory in North America. Another was a column using the example of Magic Johnson’s health to question whether or not HIV really leads to AIDS.

Why can’t Fischer say that, but can say, for example, that Hitler was gay, or that God will cure AIDS if gays cease all sexual activity? Or that Bill Clinton is responsible for the rise in oral cancer?

“Most times his views are going to be be consistent with ours, but sometimes he’s going to stray and speak on topics that we wouldn’t get into,” Wildmon said. “I’m not distancing myself or our ministry from Bryan in the sense that he does work here, he’s on our payroll.”

Fischer said that every time something’s been taken off the blog, it’s been of his own volition.

“I made those decisions,” he said.

And Fischer is visibly in full control, and evidently unworried about controversy, as he settles down each afternoon to broadcast Focal Point. He sits at a central desk, surrounded by an iPad, a computer monitor, a clipboard, stacks of papers, and two copies of the Constitution. The studio also contains a monitor where he watches himself, and a large backdrop of the Constitution overlaid on American flag imagery.
The show runs from 1:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon, putting him in the same slot as Rush Limbaugh (“You know what the big difference between me and Rush Limbaugh is? Fifty million dollars a year,” Fischer jokes).

Fischer’s dissection of the day’s news is alternately folksy and professorial. He lacks the bluster of a Rush Limbaugh or a Glenn Beck, a quality that cushions his more extreme pronouncements. When a reporter visited him last Thursday, the first part of Thursday’s show focused largely on environmental issues. For example, melting sea ice, which “ain’t happenin’, folks.” Overpopulation is another myth perpetuated by the environmentalists, in Fischer’s view. “Get busy,” he told his listening audience before the commercial break. “Fill the earth. You know what to do.”

During one commercial break, Fischer accused the visiting BuzzFeed correspondent of thinking that his views on homosexuality were “archaic.” During another, he riffed on his admiration St. Athanasius of Alexandria, a third century Egyptian scholar exiled numerous times and then horribly martyred.

Fischer waited till a few minutes in to his show to mention the Grenell episode.

“I am for homosexuals,” he stressed. “I am anti-homosexuality.”

He continued: “I am not a homophobe. I am a homophile.”

As a true believer, his love the sinner, hate the sin position doesn’t ring false. But it doesn’t save him from being branded a bigot, something that other religious leaders like Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council or Gary Bauer have learned.

“Tony Perkins doesn’t say insane stuff like that because he knows that gets you branded as a lunatic and a bigot,” said Mantyla of Right Wing Watch.

And if the Grenell episode advanced the left’s perception of Fischer as a bigot, it did something more important, in Fischer’s view: It taught Mitt Romney a lesson. Fischer has been spoiling for a fight with Romney at least since last October, when Romney blasted Fischer’s “poisonous” speech — a line delivered with Romney’s characteristic ambiguity, and referring to Fischer’s speech about gays, Muslims, or Mormons, or any combination of the three.

But wasn’t the only Romney run-in at the summit, Fischer said. He was relaxing in the green room backstage, when, he said, he was unceremoniously booted from the room by Romney’s staff.

“Man, his team came in there, it was like Secret Service, I mean the guys with the buzz cuts,” Fischer said. “And they basically threw me out of there. They said, ‘We need to have everybody out of this hallway, we need everybody out of this green room. Nobody can be in there except for Governor Romney. So I was just kicked to the curb.’”

Because of that, Fischer has never interacted with Romney, but he said doesn’t hold a grudge, he says. “That’s just how he rolls.” (A Romney aide didn’t comment on the incident.)

More recently, Fischer was the unnamed subject of Romney advisor Eric Fehrnstrom’s criticism during an MSNBC appearance of “voices of intolerance” on the right.

“The question for Gov. Romney is this,” Fischer told BuzzFeed. “The Mormon Church teaches that homosexual acts are ‘sinful’ and ‘offensive to God.’ Is your church a ‘voice of intolerance?’”

Later on his show, after taking a call from a listener who wanted to debate whether or not Muslims and Christians worship the same god, Fischer returned to Romney, and considered the online magazine Salon’s recent contention that the Mississippi radio host is the Republican nominee’s “worst enemy.”

Fischer had a ready response: “I am the best friend he has in the world.”

Village bigot Bryan Fischer is doing it again.

This time, he claimed that same-sex couples adopting children is subjecting the kids to “child abuse.”

EXCUSE ME?!!!Since when is a child having two gay parents child abuse? Methinks child abuse has another definition, and it ain’t this one…

Child abuse (n):the physical or emotional or sexual mistreatment of children.

Contrary to Fischer’s (and the majority of the GOP’s) lack of logic, same-sex parents are not abusing their children. Guess which part of society has the most child abuse? Heterosexual homes.

Also, lesbian households have had 0, ZERO PERCENT of child abuse occurring in their homes…

The Williams Institute, a research center on sexual orientation law and public policy at UCLA School of Law, has announced new findings from the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS), the longest-running study ever conducted on American lesbian families (now in its 24th year). In an article published today in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, the 17-year-old daughters and sons of lesbian mothers were asked about sexual abuse, sexual orientation, and sexual behavior.

The paper found that none of the 78 NLLFS adolescents reports having ever been physically or sexually abused by a parent or other caregiver. This contrasts with 26 percent of American adolescents who report parent or caregiver physical abuse and 8.3 percent who report sexual abuse.

According to the authors, “the absence of child abuse in lesbian mother families is particularly noteworthy, because victimization of children is pervasive and its consequences can be devastating. To the extent that our findings are replicated by other researchers, these reports from adolescents with lesbian mothers have implications for healthcare professionals, policymakers, social service agencies, and child protection experts who seek family models in which violence does not occur.”

The conservative Christian myth of “All rapists are homosexuals,” or “All abusers are homosexuals,” is just simply that: a myth!!

Homosexuality is quite common in the animal kingdom, especially among herding animals. Many animals solve conflicts by practicing same gender sex.

From the middle of October until next summer the Norwegian Natural History Museum of the University of Oslo will host the first exhibition that focuses on homosexuality in the animal kingdom.

“One fundamental premise in social debates has been that homosexuality is unnatural. This premise is wrong. Homosexuality is both common and highly essential in the lives of a number of species,” explains Petter Boeckman, who is the academic advisor for the “Against Nature’s Order?” exhibition.

The most well-known homosexual animal is the dwarf chimpanzee, one of humanity’s closes relatives. The entire species is bisexual. Sex plays an conspicuous role in all their activities and takes the focus away from violence, which is the most typical method of solving conflicts among primates and many other animals.

“Sex among dwarf chimpanzees is in fact the business of the whole family, and the cute little ones often lend a helping hand when they engage in oral sex with each other.”

Lions are also homosexual. Male lions often band together with their brothers to lead the pride. To ensure loyalty, they strengthen the bonds by often having sex with each other.

Homosexuality is also quite common among dolphins and killer whales. The pairing of males and females is fleeting, while between males, a pair can stay together for years. Homosexual sex between different species is not unusual either. Meetings between different dolphin species can be quite violent, but the tension is often broken by a “sex orgy”.

Homosexuality is a social phenomenon and is most widespread among animals with a complex herd life.

Among the apes it is the females that create the continuity within the group. The social network is maintained not only by sharing food and the child rearing, but also by having sex. Among many of the female apes the sex organs swell up. So they rub their abdomens against each other,” explains Petter Bockman and points out that animals have sex because they have the desire to, just like we humans.

Homosexual behaviour has been observed in 1,500 animal species.

“We’re talking about everything from mammals to crabs and worms. The actual number is of course much higher. Among some animals homosexual behaviour is rare, some having sex with the same gender only a part of their life, while other animals, such as the dwarf chimpanzee, homosexuality is practiced throughout their lives.”

Animals that live a completely homosexual life can also be found. This occurs especially among birds that will pair with one partner for life, which is the case with geese and ducks. Four to five percent of the couples are homosexual. Single females will lay eggs in a homosexual pair’s nest. It has been observced that the homosexual couple are often better at raising the young than heterosexual couples.

When you see a colony of black-headed gulls, you can be sure that almost every tenth pair is lesbian. The females have no problems with being impregnated, although, according to Petter Boeckman they cannot be defined as bisexual.

“If a female has sex with a male one time, but thousands of times with another female, is she bisexual or homosexual? This is the same way to have children is not unknown among homosexual people.”

Indeed, there is a number of animals in which homosexual behaviour has never been observed, such as many insects, passerine birds and small mammals.

“To turn the approach on its head: No species has been found in which homosexual behaviour has not been shown to exist, with the exception of species that never have sex at all, such as sea urchins and aphis. Moreover, a part of the animal kingdom is hermaphroditic, truly bisexual. For them, homosexuality is not an issue.”

Petter Bockman regrets that there is too little research about homosexuality among animals.

“The theme has long been taboo. The problem is that researchers have not seen for themselves that the phenomenon exists or they have been confused when observing homosexual behaviour or that they are fearful of being ridiculed by their colleagues. Many therefore overlook the abundance of material that is found. Many researchers have described homosexuality as something altogether different from sex. They must realise that animals can have sex with who they will, when they will and without consideration to a researcher’s ethical principles.”

One example of overlooking behaviour noted by Petter Bockman is a description of mating among giraffes, when nine out of ten pairings occur between males.

“Every male that sniffed a female was reported as sex, while anal intercourse with orgasm between males was only “revolving around” dominance, competition or greetings.

Masturbation is common in the animal kingdom.

“Masturbation is the simplest method of self pleasure. We have a Darwinist mentality that all animals only have sex to procreate. But there are plenty of animals who will masturbate when they have nothing better to do. Masturbation has been observed among primates, deer, killer whales and penguins, and we’re talking about both males and females. They rub themselves against stones and roots. Orangutans are especially inventive. They make dildos of wood and bark,” says Petter Boeckman of the Norwegian Natural History Museum.

With regard to students, SAT scores began to plummet almost immediately, starting in 1963, and have never recovered. The rate of premarital sex began to climb, as did the rate of sexually transmitted diseases. Teenage pregnancies and teen births began to skyrocket, again starting in 1963. Since 1963, the rates of adultery, divorce, cohabitation and domestic abuse have risen dramatically, and the intact nuclear family is being ravaged perhaps beyond repair.

With regard to “teachers” and our educational system, SAT scores have fallen into the basement while rates of school violence are shooting through the ceiling and our armed forces are hampered by functionally illiterate recruits.

The consequences for “our Country” are equally catastrophic. Homicide rates are up; more Americans are being gunned down in cold blood this year in Chicago than in Afghanistan. The nuclear family is breaking apart at culture-destroying rates. One of out every five adults in America has a lifelong, incurable sexually transmitted disease.The sexual and physical abuse of children is out of control.

The Supreme Court compounded its godless and criminal misconduct by banning the Ten Commandments and its moral precepts from classrooms in 1980. Their reasoning was fantastically absurd when looked at in the light of last night’s massacre.

“[I]f the posted copies of the Ten Commandments are to have any effect at all, it will be to induce the schoolchildren to read, meditate upon, perhaps to venerate and obey, the Commandments,” which, the Court said, is “not a permissible state objective under the Establishment Clause.”

So these black-robed miscreants said we cannot permit potential mass murderers like James Holmes to read or meditate on God’s prohibition “Thou shall not murder” as a part of their education, because someone like him just might be inclined to “venerate and obey” it and not go on a midnight shooting rampage leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake. No, we can’t be having that, now, can we?

It’s time for us to say to the left we’ve tried it your way for the past 60 years and our country is being destroyed before our very eyes. It’s time to try it our way for next 60 years. If we don’t like what we see in 2072, we can always drink again from the poisoned well of secular fundamentalism. Something tells me we won’t want to.

The Liberal Card: AFA Bigot Bryan Fischer Claims WI Sikh Gurdwara Shooter Was A Liberal...Even Though Neo-Nazis Aren't Liberal!!!

On today’s program, Bryan Fischer weighed in on the shooting at a Sikh temple over the weekend where a racist neo-Nazi murdered six people and injured several others.  Fischer declared that the shooter was obviously a liberal because he was a Nazi who didn’t like Herman Cain … and everyone knows that the Nazis were liberals just as liberals and Democrats have always been “the party of racism” and responsible for slavery and the Ku Klux Klan:

You know what the Nazi Party stands for? It’s the National Socialist Party. What about the word “socialist” do you not understand? They were the National Socialist Party - that is a left-wing political philosophy. And you think even here in the United States, who was the part of racism? It was the left, it was liberals who were the part of racism. It was Democrats that supported and defended the institution of slavery. It was Democrats that resisted the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. It was Democrats that instituted Jim Crow laws. It was Democrats that created the Ku Klux Klan. It was Democrats that filibustered the Civil Rights Acts of the mid-1960s.
