Michelle Duggar, reality TV star and mother of 19,doesn’t believe in overpopulation. In a Web interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, the star of TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” remarked that the idea of overpopulation isn’t accurate.
”Well, first off, the idea of overpopulation is not accurate because really the entire population of the world, if they were stretched shoulder to shoulder, could fit within the city limits of Jacksonville,” Duggar said. Theland area of Jacksonvilleis between 758 and 885 square miles. The world population is a little over 7 billion, which would equal about 8,500,000 people per square mile.
But overpopulation, according to experts, isn’t just about the number of people on a piece of land. James Hopkins’ site onthe human population crisisstates, “Overpopulation applies much more so to the number of people in an area exceeding the resources and the carrying capacity of the environment necessary to sustain human activities.”
Scientists have called overpopulationthe worst problem the environment faces. “Overpopulation is the only problem,” said Dr. Charles A. Hall, a systems ecologist in 2009. “If we had 100 million people on Earth — or better, 10 million — no others would be a problem.”
In a speech earlier this month,Stanford professor Paul Ehrlichremarked that to give everyone the kind of standard of living enjoyed by the average Kansas resident, we would need about four or five other Earths.
Still, Duggar believes she and her family are resourceful when it comes to buying and discarding. “What our family does is that our motto is we buy used and we save the difference. We go to the thrift store. We buy used cars.”
“To say that there are too many children is like saying there are too many flowers,” Duggar said, quoting the late Mother Teresa. “Our world needs more joy.”

Duggar Debacle: Oldest Son of “19 Kids and Counting” Duggar Family Possibly Being Given High-Ranking Role At Controversial Anti-Gay Group Family Research Council…I Will Never Watch Their Show Again!!!
Josh Duggar reportedly will be appointed to a senior executive position at FRC. “No decision has been made,” Duffy says.
NATIONAL HARBOR, MD. — The oldest son of the Duggar family could be joining the conservative Family Research Council in a senior executive position, according to three sources familiar with the organization.
The hiring of Josh Duggar, 25, the oldest of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 children, will be announced in about a month.
Duggar will be in charge of FRC Action, the organization’s lobbying arm, sources told BuzzFeed. “FRC Action (formerly American Renewal), the non-profit and tax-exempt legislative action arm of Family Research Council, was founded in 1992 to educate the general public and cultural leaders about traditional American values and to promote the philosophy of the Founding Fathers concerning the nature of ordered liberty,” according to FRC Action’s website.
The Duggars parlayed their reality TV show fame into political activism in the past year, appearing on the stump for Rick Santorum throughout the Republican primary process. Josh Duggar recently announced on Today that he and his wife are expecting their third child.
UPDATE: FRC’s Vice President for Communications, JP Duffy, said that a final decision had not been made on Duggar’s hiring. ” We greatly appreciate Josh and the Duggar family’s devotion to the pro-family movement and their counter-cultural courage,” Duffy said. “This is why we have talked to Josh about the position. We have talked to him as well as other candidates but no decision has been made.” (3/15/2013)
Duggar Goes To Washington: The Oldest Child of The 19-Child Duggar Family Is Heading To Washington To Work For The Family Research Council
One of the 19 Duggar children is leaving the family’s home state of Arkansas and moving to D.C. for a job with the Family Research Council. There, Josh Duggar will take over as the Executive Director of FRCAction, the lobbying arm of the conservative organization probably best known for its anti-gay advocacy.
The Duggars are conservative Christians who became famous after TLC created a reality show about their enormous family, and Josh is the oldest child. The family as a whole have been active in conservative outreach on the national level before, for instance, by campaigning for Rick Santorum (and then eventually endorsing Romney). And here they are, von Trapping at the 2011 March For Life in Little Rock:
So the news that Josh is entering political advocacy is hardly a surprise — it’s part of the family business. Plus, Buzzfeed reported rumors of his interest in the job back in March.
The FRC says that Josh will be able to help with “grassroots” outreach for the organization, probably because he’s easily marketable as an outsider to D.C. politics. As it turns out, the Washington Post reported, Josh’s dad has known FRC president Tony Perkins since 2002, when the two ran unsuccessfully as candidates for the Senate. But the job announcement, keeping on the grassroots theme, is sticking strong to the “gee whiz” folksy charm that the FRC is hoping will make Josh an effective member of their team, one that’s relatable to their target audience outside the beltway."I think helping with all the logistics of the family of 19," Perkins said on his Monday radio show about the hire, adding, “certainly you are going to be handling campaigns and political activities … should be a breeze.”
Josh is 25, and his three kids himself, one of whom is two weeks old. It looks like he’s carrying on the “quiverfull”-style beliefs of his family, who practice a form of Christianity that encourages women to have as many children as they’re able, in the name of God. The Duggars, as you might suspect, are against the use of birth control, and, like the FRC, very much against abortion.
Meet The GOP’s Newest Anti-Gay Bigot To Join The Ranks (And Possibly Be Contending In 2016): Josh Duggar, The Eldest Son of Christian “Quiverfull” Couple Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar
Josh Duggar, the eldest son of TLC’s “19 Kids And Counting” is moving to Washington, D.C. to head the political action arm of Tony Perkins’ anti-gay hate group, FRC Action. The Family Research Council is listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-gay hate group. The eldest Duggar sibling and his wife, Anna, just celebrated the birth of their third child.
Teasing the announcement, Perkins said, ”We want to congratulate Josh and Anna Duggar on the birth of Marcus. They have been an inspiration to millions of Americans who regularly tune in to see the Duggar family’s show. All of us at Family Research Council have long appreciated their devotion to the pro-family movement.”
Josh Duggar talked about the possibility back in March. ”Josh confirmed that he will be working with a Christian organization to help promote ‘family values and right to life.’”
— Josh Duggar (@joshduggar) June 17, 2013
GLAAD weighed in yesterday:
Duggar said that he will be working on the 501c4 side of the organization, which is more politically driven. He can’t even claim he’s just going to shape the culture.
Now that Josh Duggar has accepted a position at such an anti-gay organization, he has become a full-fledged anti-gay activist. What does this mean for TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting? Will TLC allow it to become a mainstream outlet for FRC’s dangerous message? What about the Duggar family’s appearances in other media? Will his work with one of the most vile anti-gay organizations in America be legitimized there?
“If Josh Duggar wants to make a living dehumanizing and denigrating LGBT people and their families, that’s his business, but FRC’s lies and stereotypes need to be treated as such,” said GLAAD Spokesperson Wilson Cruz. “Josh’s new boss Tony Perkins has actually accused LGBT equality advocates of being pawns of the devil. Fans of his family’s reality show ought to know that.”
Josh Duggar is clearly enamored with the Tea Party and the rabidly anti-gay right. A quick glance through his Facebook photos shows him arm in arm with Republican extremists Rick Santorum and Rand Paul.
Jeremy Hooper at Good As You adds:
But don’t even try, TLC network, to position Josh’s story as something that should warm the fires within my own heart and home. That ship has sailed. This TLC star is going to be paid to spearhead a quest that seeks to diminish, if not completely extinguish, all that I hold dear within my own marriage, family, and home. Forget carefully edited reality TV—for me and millions of others, this crap just got really real. For real.
UPDATE: The Family Research Council, the vehemently anti-gay organization that Josh Duggar just announced that he will be working for, has been officially recognized by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. As you will read here, it most certainly earns that distinctive infamous label that is shared by the Ku Klux Klan and the Westboro Baptist Church.
Josh and his family can no longer hide behind the guise of a “reality TV show” to further their controversial political and religious beliefs on millions of Americans. Just as they (and other conservatives) have fussed about other TV shows and movies furthering views, 19 Kids and Counting furthers controversial political and religious views. Beliefs such as birth begins at conception, that women need to have lots of babies, that women should not have to work at all to provide for their families, and others make what seem like an innocent reality TV show a vehicle for right-wing extremism, especially extreme right-wing extremism.
The Duggars believe in the controversial Quiverfull movement, and are adherents to that belief system in Christianity. Here’s a primer below:
Patriarchy ~ this is the belief that by God’s perfect design, it is the father who is the head of the home ~ in his leadership capacity, the father serves as protector, provider and shepherd for his wife and children. He is primarily responsible for the wife’s and children’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being and with such responsibility comes the (divinely granted) commensurate authority over the members of his household. According to this view, God works through the father and he serves as an intermediary for his wife and children. Honor, obedience and submission are highly valued qualities because they are necessary to maintain order and work together to accomplish the Lord’s vision for a godly family.
Courtship or Betrothal instead of dating ~ the father’s protection of and authority over his children extends especially to the choosing of a mate. In this system, the fathers play a very influential role in the “courtship” process. Every family seems to have its own take on exactly how courtship is to be carried out. Typically, if a young man is interested in a particular girl, he will consult with his father who then approaches the father of the young lady to discuss the possibility of a potential match. If the girl’s father is in agreement, he will then talk to his daughter ~ and if she shows an interest, the courtship (or betrothal ~ which is as binding as marriage) begins and this basically means that the couple is serious about getting married. The parents are in control of the relationship at all times. The couple is not to be alone together. The courtship / betrothal period is usually brief and it is expected that the couple will experience their first kiss at the marriage altar. At that time, the father’s authority over the daughter is transferred to her new husband.
Sheltering of the children ~ the home school mindset includes the basic belief that children are to be protected and sheltered from “the world” ~ outside influences which could be detrimental to the child’s spiritual well-being. It is often quoted that “foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child” ~ this coupled with the scripture which says, “a companion of fools shall be ruined,” leads to the logical conclusion that children (fools) should not be socialized by other children (fools) ~ but instead should learn social skills from adults. Isolation and control of outside influences is not only considered normal and good ~ it is the godly approach to childrearing.
Biblical Manhood and Womanhood ~ the teaching is that God designed males and females to fulfill distinct roles and that men and women cannot be truly satisfied unless they are consistently filling their special role as a man or woman of God. Men are to be leaders, teachers, initiators, protectors and providers. Women are created to be “helpmeets” to the men in authority over them (husbands, fathers, older brothers) ~ they are to be submissive and yielding. Their primary sphere of influence comes from their role as wives and mothers. The woman’s home is her ministry and her children are her mission field.
Being debt-free and independent of government programs/subsidies ~ adoption of this ideal often leads to financial hardship and deprivation in large families. In order to achieve financial independence, a QF/P family will often move to a rural location or live in sub-standard housing. Wives often operate businesses out of their home, often employing the children to help with the work, in order to supplement the husband’s income. Refusal of government assistance sometimes means that these families go without medical insurance ~ a situation which can influence the parents to choose “natural remedies,” home birth, and similar non-medical approaches to family health.
Home Church / Family-Integrated Church ~ because the family (primarily the father) is seen as the primary conveyor of spiritual guidance and teaching, QF/P families often seek fellowship with like-minded families in a setting which is not age-segregated. The children worship and learn alongside their parents and peer-interaction is closely monitored by the adults / young adults who are present.
Modesty ~ a girl or woman whose clothing is “revealing” is guilty of “defrauding” her Christian “brother” ~ because she is tempting him with impure thoughts in relation to a body (hers) which is not rightfully his to possess. Quiverfull females often wear dresses only ~ many will also wear a head covering as a sign of a woman’s submission to her “head” ~ that is, her husband.
Not all Quiverfull families subscribe to all of the family values listed above ~ and not all accept and practice these teachings to the same degree. There are Quiverfull families which do not home school. There are Quiverfull couples who, while paying lip-service to the “husband as head” mandate, in actual practice are much more egalitarian (mutual submission) when it comes to the decision-making process.
Generally the longer a Christian family is involved in the home school community, the more deeply they become involved in this “family values” lifestyle ~ it is a process which transforms a “normal” family into a patriarchal cult completely at odds with the general population. In fact, the more “peculiar” (set apart) the family becomes, the more they consider themselves “true believers” following “the narrow way” as opposed to their neighbors who are on the “broad path which leads to destruction.”
The women of America should be scared. Very scared. Especially if Josh Duggar even hints at running for President in 2016. However, I doubt that he is old enough to do so.
Regardless, the candidate that he and his entire family (and I mean all 19 kids) endorsed in the 2012 election, Mitt Romney, unequivocally endorsed the Quiverfull movement.
American women, this is what your future looks like if the Republicans get the White House back, especially if it’s a Tea Party candidate.
How Does Discovery Channel Feel About Being Used By A Certified Hate Group?
I wonder how the Discovery Channel feels about being used by a certified anti-gay hate group. The Discovery Channel, officially Discovery Communications (NASDAQ:DISCA), is the parent company of TLC, or, The Learning Channel. TLC is home to the wildly popular series, “9 Kids and Counting,” about the Duggar family.
As reported, Josh Duggar has landed a new job as Executive Director of FRC Action, the activist wing of the Family Research Council. The FRC sits on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of active anti-gay hate groups.
So, as you can see in the video below, when Josh Duggar says “Hello, I’m Josh Duggar, from TLC’s ’19 Kids And Counting,’” you have to wonder how a nationally-traded company on the NASDAQ feels about him using their company’s name.
Duggar says “it’s a great honor” to be working for FRC Action, “promoting the values that have been close to the heart of my family for many years.”
Do those values include saying gay people “are intolerant. They are hateful. They are vile. They are spiteful,” and calling them “pawns” of the “enemy”? Does Duggar’s famiy values include falsely claiming gay men are more likely to molest children? How about comparing same-sex marriage to bestiality? Or saying “it’s a fact” that homosexuality leads to “eternal damnation”?
Because his boss, Tony Perkins, does — and supports and has said those very things.
In this video, an invitation to FRC’s annual Values Voters Summit — a gathering of the nation’s to religious right radicals and anti-gay politicians, including those in the image on the right, Duggar talks about opposing same-sex marriage and a woman’s right to choose.
Are those positions TLC and Discovery Communications want to come down in opposition to, also?
By the way, Discovery Communications includes 28 cable brands, including not just the Discovery Channel and TLC, but the Military Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Fit & Health, the Travel Channel, and the Science Channel. They also have a relationship with Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions for OWN.
What Josh Duggar does is of course his own business. But how many publicly-traded companies really want to be associated with a certified anti-gay hate group that has a long and embarrassing history of marginalizing and lying about LGBT people?

The Duggars Go To Washington: The Dangers of Josh Duggar Being Hired By One of the Most Vehemently Anti-Gay Organizations In America, How His Family’s Television Show Is Promoting His New Colleagues, And Why His Family’s Beliefs Are Damaging & Dangerous [TW: Anti-Gay Bigotry, Anti-Gay Discrimination, Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia, Misogyny, Sexism, Heterosexism]
Below is my special investigation on Josh Duggar, the Duggar family, the Family Research Council, and how all three are dangerous to American politics and society. I will admit, I did previously watch 19 Kids and Counting. That was so until I discovered the family’s controversial beliefs, and the eldest son’s new controversial job. I have not openly watched the show since, and I refuse to do so.
According to the Family Research Center (FRC), Josh “will bring his pro-life and pro-family passions to the political arena where he will help expand FRCA’s reach as a premier conservative advocacy group.”
Quite honestly, all you really need to know about Josh Duggar is that he served as a surrogate for Rick Santorum during the 2012 Republican presidential primary – that bit of information should tell you all you really need to know about Josh, what he believes and what he will bring to the table in his new role in the political arena.
The Family Research Center is such a hate-filled, anti-gay organization that the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2010 labeled it a “hate group” for its “dissemination of false and demonizing propaganda about gays and lesbians.”
Now, I will admit to being a reality television addict – however, I can also say that I never watched an episode of the Duggars and theirQuiverfull life.
I find the whole “Quiverfull” thing just wrong on so many levels.
This idea that you should have as many children as the Lord chooses to bless you with, and that artificial or chemical birth control are equated with abortion, are ideas which are just too much for me to even begin to understand.
Josh Duggar is going to follow in the Quiverfull life and have as many children as the Lord chooses to bless him with. He will raise them in a home where the Father is the head of the household and his wife will be submissive to him.
(It was hard for me to type that last sentence, let alone try and understand a life that is lived in such a way.)
And this is the man who is going to help the FRC in “…taking our grassroots outreach to the next level and engaging more young people to care about the values so vital to our success as a nation.”
And those values would be what? Men in charge, women being submissive, intolerance, hatred, ignorance, lies, discrimination, and all the other hateful, anti-gay rhetoric that flows from the Family Research Center.
Ever vigilant, my friends – we must be ever vigilant.
Josh Duggar, the eldest of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 children, featured on TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting,” is joining the Family Research Council, the anti-gay hate group headed by “traditional family” activist Tony Perkins.
Duggar, 25, who has said in the past that he “will be working with a Christian organization to help promote ‘family values and right to life,’” is joining FRC as Executive Director of FRC Action, the organization’s legislative affiliate.
“Now that Josh Duggar has accepted a position at such an anti-gay organization, he has become a full-fledged anti-gay activist,” said media watchdog GLAAD.
“If Josh Duggar wants to make a living dehumanizing and denigrating LGBT people and their families, that’s his business, but FRC’s lies and stereotypes need to be treated as such,” said GLAADSpokesperson Wilson Cruz. “Josh’s new boss Tony Perkins has actually accused LGBT equality advocates of being pawns of the devil. Fans of his family’s reality show ought to know that.”
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) labeled the FRC a “hate group” back in 2010 “because of its dissemination of false and demonizing propaganda about gays and lesbians.”
Among the FRC’s claims:
“Gaining access to children has been a long-term goal of the homosexual movement.”
– Robert Knight, FRC director of cultural studies, and Frank York, 1999
“[Homosexuality] … embodies a deep-seated hatred against true religion.”
– Steven Schwalm, FRC senior writer and analyst, in “Desecrating Corpus Christi,” 1999
“One of the primary goals of the homosexual rights movement is to abolish all age of consent laws and to eventually recognize pedophiles as the ‘prophets’ of a new sexual order.”
– 1999 FRC pamphlet, Homosexual Activists Work to Normalize Sex with Boys.
“[T]he evidence indicates that disproportionate numbers of gay men seek adolescent males or boys as sexual partners.”
– Timothy Dailey, senior research fellow, “Homosexuality and Child Sexual Abuse,” 2002
“While activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. … It is a homosexual problem.”
– FRC President Tony Perkins, FRC website, 2010
“Those who understand the homosexual community — the activists — they’re very aggressive, they’re—everything they accuse us of they are in triplicate. They’re intolerant, they’re hateful, vile, they’re spiteful.”
– Tony Perkins, Speaking to the Oak Initiative Summit, April 2011
More about the Family Research Council is here.
On the TLC network, another season of 19 Kids & Counting will makes its debut. And when it does, the show will spend some of its time documenting the Duggar’s eldest son, Josh, as he moves his family to the nation’s capital.
When I asked TLC spokesperson Shannon Martin about the plans for how the show will cover Josh’s move, here is what she told me:
“19 Kids and Counting will cover Josh/Anna’s life outside of Josh’s new position at the FRC. His professional life will not be followed in the show. Thanks for your email.”
Right, so let’s talk about his professional life, the basis of my email to Ms. Martin.
In terms of plot line, that is Josh’s big story. Over the past year he has gone from being a family man and reality star to also being a senior voice for an organization that the Southern Povery Law Center designates as an active anti-gay hate group.
In his new role at FRC, Josh has not shied away from making his anti-LGBT views known. While serving as a fill-in radio host for his boss at FRC, the jaw-droppingly anti-LGBT Tony Perkins, Josh recently admitted that he sees his lesbian aunt as “choosing” a “lifestyle”:
In another appearance, Josh commiserated with Rick Santorum on his “totally correct” assessment of what gay people supposedly do to the American family:
There’s also this one, in which Josh questioned the science surrounding sexual orientation before claiming that lawmakers are “giving special rights” to LGBT people: (First voice is Josh’s cohost for this day, Ryan Bomberger.)
This is is anti-LGBT advocacy, which is now a major part of his Josh Duggar makes his living. Josh moved to DC so he could work alongside colleagues who admit they want to “export” gay people…
FRC Senior Policy Fellow Peter Sprigg:
“I would much prefer to export homosexuals from the United States than to import them into the United States, because we believe that homosexuality is destructive to society.”
…who say gays are “vile” and “held captive by the enemy”…
FRC President Tony Perkins:
“Those that understand the homosexual community — the activists — they are very aggressive…everything they accuse us of they are in triplicate. They’re intolerant, they’re hateful, they’re vile, they’re spiteful…Our response to them should be one of love and of compassion. But let me tell you what, it’s not love to be silent in the face of those who are advancing an agenda that is destructive to our society and, more importantly, destructive to individuals involved. To me, that is the height of hatred—to be silent when we know there individuals engaged in behavior, activity, and an agenda that will destroy them and our nation. We’ve got to be very careful to guard our hearts — that we in the midst of this battle don’t become so calloused, that we realize they’re not the enemy. The enemy is simply using them as pawns. They are held captive by the enemy…”
…and who claim we are possessed by the Devil:
FRC VP OF Religious Ministries, Kenyn Cureton:
“Who do you think is ultimately behind the efforts to advance the radical homosexual agenda, indoctrinate our children, and ruin our military, now? Who’s behind the efforts to get God out of government, Christ out of culture, and faith out of public life? Who’s behind it? Well, I think we’ve got a pretty clear answer. [laughter] The Devil is behind it! So, the real enemy…it’s not the poor, deluded souls who are advancing these ungodly agendas—they’re simply pawns in the hands of their malevolent master. They need to be set free by the grace of God in the person of Jesus Christ—amen?…As you think about this battle in which we’re engaged, you need to think about who the real enemy is that we’re fighting against here, and that is, the fact is, we’re up against the organized, mobilized, demonized forces of hell itself. And really, to the victor goes the prize of the America our children will inherit, so this is a fight we dare not lose. Amen?”
These are now Josh’s coworkers. Office mates. Colaborers in the “pro-family” movement.
And the thing is, Josh has used his reality TV profile to promote FRC’s interests. Check out the following promotion for the Family Research Council’s upcoming Values Voters Summit, one of the most reliably anti-LGBT events on the conservative political calendar. Note how Josh pointedly mentions his TLC show in order to drive people to an event that he admits is focused, in part, on “traditional marriage”:
We should also note that Josh is slated to speak at the conference, as are his parents and fellow TLC stars, Michelle and Jim Bob.
Josh is using TLC to promote what is probably the single most anti-LGBT political organization in this nation. The fact of the matter is that one of this show’s biggest stars is now working for a special interest group that makes attacking LGBT rights its top priority. I mean, just the other day, FRC released a fundraising pitch that admitted the organization wants to “heal” LGBT people and save us from out “unhealthy and destructive” “lifestyles”:
FRC uses this fundraising money to pay Josh Duggar’s salary! And yet Josh wants LGBT viewers to just overlook the harsh truth in order to buy into a glossy reality TV fiction?
Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way. When viewers see shots of Josh Duggar with DC monuments glowing behind him, they should know that he is in that city so that he can help one of the LGBT community’s most rabid opponents carry out its agenda. That is what he is helping to plot—it’s only fair that his plot lines reflect this, an anti-LGBT political mission for which he himself signed up.
The premiere will specifically focus on Josh and Anna’s move, with Josh even mentioning that he has to report to work. Here’s a clip:
It is completely reasonable for us to ask what, exactly, this work entails.
During a recent interview on the Today Show, Jim Bob Duggar blurted out, “It’s fun trying!” when asked if he and Michelle were actively seeking to have another baby. Today’s host, Savannah Guthrie responded to the mega-dad’s salacious remark with, “Jim Bob - you sly dog!”
Viewers may have come away with the impression that TLC’s “19 & Counting” celebrity parents, Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar hold very casual, perhaps even avant-garde attitudes regarding sex and sexuality.
But a quick look beneath the surface reveals that America’s most celebrated Quiverfull couple believe and espouse decidedly unhealthy ideas when it comes to sex and babymaking.
Although Jim Bob makes frequent displays of romantic affection toward his prolific wife, Michelle, which would suggest that the couple might enjoy sex for non-procreative purposes, the “biblical family values” advocates— whose “literal” interpretations of scripture inspire the Duggars to receive each and every pregnancy as an unmitigated blessing from God—also teach that the primary purpose of woman is to conceive and bear sons, i.e., “arrows" for God’s army.
Consider Romans 1:27: “And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.”
Since the word used for female is connected so strongly with the idea of nursing babies, whereas it has no connection at all with the idea of sexual activity, I believe that God is saying here that when women exchange their natural function of childbearing and motherliness for that which is “against nature” (that is, trying to behave sexually like a man), the men tend to abandon the natural sexual use of the women and turn to homosexuality. (pp. 27-28)
Nancy Campbell, “editress” of Above Rubies—an international Christian women’s magazine— encourages “women in their high calling as wives, mothers, and homemakers” by explaining in her book, Be Fruitful & Multiply: What the Bible Says About Having Children, that the word “woman” is a combination of the words “womb” and “man.” Woman means “womb man” or “man with a womb.”
With regard to the Romans 1:27 “natural use of the woman" passage, Campbell says, ”Women were created by God’s design to function as nourishers by nourishing life in their womb and a babe at their breast. When women deliberately turn away from their natural functions, they do it to their own detriment.” (pp. 105-107)
Sure “family values” champion, Jim Bob Duggar puts on a nice show of desiring his godly wife for more than just her ability to produce yet another arrow for his already overflowing quiver … but Jim Bob’s hermeneutics as well as his politics belie enigmatic presuppositions about the purpose of marriage, sex, and Christian wives.
Speaking in regard to Todd Akin’s recent “legitimate rape” and Paul Ryan’s rape as a “method of conception” remarks, Amanda Marcotte explains the fundamentalist mentality that, “the fact that someone can make a baby means that making babies is what she is for. … Women are among an array of objects to be used. The refrigerator is for storing food. The bookshelf is for holding books. The woman is for making babies. You no more give her a choice in the matter than you would give your refrigerator veto power over what food it holds because it didn’t like your method of shopping.”
Could another pregnancy be life-threatening for Michelle Duggar? Might it be risky for baby #20? Could another pregnancy leave their 19 already-born children motherless? Yes - of course! Is Jim Bob Duggar having fun trying to get his wife pregnant nevertheless? If making babies is Michelle’s divine purpose - if that is why God made her … why shouldn’t her husband enjoy knocking her up one more time? It’s only natural.
Jim Bob - you sly dog! And Josh Duggar, you dastardly demon!
