Homeowners did not invent the subprime mortgage industry. Homeowners did not lose $44 trillion in wealth in 2007-08. Example, Lehman Brothers was leveraged 33:1 when it went bankrupt in 2008. Homeowners did not push Lehman to take on that much risk.
