Really, is it that difficult for American politicians to stand up and say: “I’m sorry that some of my fellow Americans said horrible things about your religion. They do not speak for all of us. However, no matter how offensive their words, one of our deepest cultural values is to respect the right to free speech. So we will not prosecute or shut down those who have offended you. That is not how a free society works, and we do not care how much you protest about it. We have deeply held values too and we will state them proudly and we will defend them. The right of free speech will not be abridged.
